Farewell to DOS (song)

Click here to download Farewell to DOS

What inspired this song?
Since Windows 3.1 came out, DOS has had to compete with it to be the dominant operating system. Technically Win 3.1 was a DOS application, but it was the beginning of the end of DOS. When Windows 95 came out, the DOS prompt was the closest you could get to true DOS without an alternate boot sequence. Now in Windows XP and Vista, the Command Prompt doesn't even give credit to the name DOS. So I guess this means that DOS is really gone!

Is there going to be a video for this one too?
Maybe, b ut I'd rather concentrate on writing more songs for you all. Perhaps I'll end up selling an album of computer songs...?

Lyrics to Farewell to DOS

Back in the day when PCs were invented
Before 640K was not enough
And all your data fit on just one floppy
There was a system known as DOS

Now DOS was all that users ever needed
To run their programs and view all their files
But then along came Windows 3.1
And so right then did DOS begin to die

Farewell to DOS the faithful and the true
There's so much we can't do without you
Classic games that Windows just can't run
Like Pacman, Frogger and Zaxxon
And other that we'll never see again

So Windows grew to be more user friendly
And DOS no longer ran the CPU
Because it could not read the longer file names
DOS was rejected as a working tool

Farewell to DOS the faithful and the true
It was Windows that outdated you
The drag-drop-clicking interface
Must to you be a big disgrace
With no revers compatibility

Good-bye our friend we won't forget
The first time you booted and we met
There is no way we can replace
Your command line interface

Farewell to DOS the faithful and the true
We all know there's nothing wrong with you
Your 8.3 convention works just find
Good and simplistic by design
C colin backslash greater than sign (C:\>)

(Instrumental)

Farewell to DOS the faithful and the true
There's so much we can't do without you
Classic games that Windows just can't run
Like Pacman, Frogger and Zaxxon
And other that we'll never see again
Never see again

Quote of the day...

Bug? That's not a bug, that's a feature.
